Ivy's Chinese School Recital Dress

When Ivy is asked to write and perform a poem for her Chinese School recital she is nervous.  Could she ever write a poem as well as Po Po (grandmother)?

When Julie asks Ivy to take a disco class with her she finds courage in an unexpected place and learns that it takes the first step to learn a whole dance.  With that in mind Ivy writes her poem and makes her family proud.

Ivy's School recital dress is the same dress she wears to Disco class, the gold sequins and lime green chiffon remind her to keep trying just as the famous dancers at the class had to do.  Paired with nude go go boots and a fun gold beret Ivy is sure to light up the stage and the dance floor.

Inspiration:

I wanted to do a fun disco style dress for Ivy's outfit.  She goes to Chinese school in her book and I had always wished she had more stories since I loved all the things in her culture and thought it would have been fun to read the rest of her story.

Construction:

I used the molly undergarments pattern to create the top of the dress, everything else was cut freehand.  I used an old bridesmaid dress for the materials.  The boots worn are from Ivy's meet dress.  The sequins was a bit difficult to cut and keep from fraying so I used a zig zag stitch to keep the edges from unraveling.  I used a rolled hem for the chiffon and a zig zag for the under lining.

I think it came together nicely for my first time making a doll dress.  A small chinese scroll was made from a wood rod and paper. The scroll says Ling Bo or Ivy Ling in Chinese.

Photos and Modeling:

I took a few pictures of Ivy in front of a plain backdrop and the others were taken outside.  This is also my first time doing a doll photo shoot and it was a lot of fun.
